Established in 1893, Muttungal LP School later renamed ULCCS Centenary Lower Primary School, Muttungal has stood as a cornerstone of inclusive, quality education in the coastal region of Vatakara, Kozhikode. For over a century, the school has nurtured a vibrant and diverse learning environment, providing children from all socio-economic backgrounds with strong foundational education rooted in community values and equity. However, the school encountered a major disruption in 2019 when the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) acquired its land and buildings as part of a national infrastructure project. This forced relocation to a temporary, substandard facility severely affected student enrollment, academic performance, and the overall spirit of the institution. The loss of a dedicated learning space triggered deep concern among the local community and signaled an urgent need for intervention.
In response, a community-led initiative the Muttungal LP School Protection Committee was formed by parents, educators, alumni, and civic leaders. Their mission was to safeguard the legacy of the school and reimagine its role in modern education. Their efforts caught the attention of the Uralungal Labor Contract Cooperative Society (ULCCS), one of India’s most respected cooperatives with a strong commitment to social development and education. As part of its centenary celebrations, ULCCS assumed the school’s management in the 2024–25 academic year, aiming to transform it into a model of grassroots educational excellence. A new, state-of-the-art campus was established, equipped with modern infrastructure, interactive classrooms, and inclusive learning environments. More importantly, this physical transformation was matched by a visionary educational mission: to implement a research-based, co-curricular activity-driven curriculum that fosters both mental and physical development among young learners.
Rooted in international best practices and guided by local cultural context, this initiative aims to create a holistic early childhood education model that not only supports academic readiness but also nurtures creativity, emotional intelligence, physical wellness, and collaborative learning. The curriculum emphasizes experiential learning through music, art, movement, storytelling, gardening, and other co-curricular activities making education joyful, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate.

The education initiatives of ULCCS operate under the umbrella of the ULCCS Foundation and are collectively known as UL Education, reflecting the organization’s focused commitment to transformative, community-centered learning. Grounded in its century-long legacy of social equity and cooperative values, ULCCS views education as a powerful instrument for societal transformation. This vision is reflected in its comprehensive educational initiatives designed to uplift, empower, and prepare young minds for the demands of a changing world.
One of the foundation’s most prominent initiatives is the Vagbhatananda Edu Project (VEP), launched in 2010–11, which aims to support academically promising yet socially disadvantaged students. The project identifies students through a rigorous selection process and provides them with sustained academic support, mentorship, and exposure to experiential learning. With a strong focus on core subjects, co-curricular engagement, and leadership development, VEP has steadily expanded across Kozhikode district. The program incorporates field visits, interactions with professionals, and training for scholarship exams such as NTSE and JEE, while also nurturing the students’ sense of social responsibility.
Complementing this effort is the UL Space Club, an initiative that fosters scientific curiosity and builds capacity in astronomy and space sciences among school students. Founded in 2016 by former ISRO director E.K. Kutty, the Space Club conducts intensive space camps in collaboration with premier institutions such as VSSC and NIT Calicut. During the pandemic, it shifted to an online model, organizing over 60 webinars and launching student publications and podcasts. The club also offers programs like Skysafari for amateur astronomers and is actively working on launching a student satellite project in collaboration with NIT Calicut and Ananth Technologies.
UL Care Nayanar Sadanam, established in 2015, is a pioneering initiative dedicated to empowering students and adults with intellectual challenges through vocational training and employment support. Since the launch of its placement program in 2017, the institution has successfully integrated 102 individuals into meaningful roles across both private and public sector organizations—offering them dignity, purpose, and a sustainable livelihood. Each students undergoes a detailed assessment upon admission to identify their skills, interests, and potential. Based on these evaluations, tailored vocational training is provided to prepare them for suitable employment opportunities.
For those capable of working outside, a dedicated professional team engages with prospective employers to secure safe, appropriate, and stress-free job placements. Continuous monitoring and regular feedback from employers ensure long-term success and peace of mind for families. Students and adults who may not be suited for external employment are engaged in the institution’s in-house production unit, allowing them to contribute meaningfully and earn an income. This initiative has restored hope to families and guardians, proving that with the right support, individuals with intellectual challenges can become productive, valued members of society.
Through these multifaceted initiatives, ULCCS continues to redefine the role of education in cooperative development, creating pathways for student success and positioning itself as a leader in socially responsive, forward-looking education in Kerala. In continuation with these novel initiatives, we have taken over the ULCCS Centenary LP School, Muttungal, with the vision of transforming it into a model institution that reflects our commitment to inclusive, innovative, and future-ready education.
